STRAWBERRY
The history of strawberries takes us back 2200 years to the territories of France and Italy, where only wild strawberries were originally known. They were grown as ornamental plants, not as food. People did not like them because their fruits were small, hard and tasteless. We have information about them from the first century in the works of the Roman poets Virgil and Ovid.
Our well-known garden strawberry appears much later. It was grown in Brittany, France in 1750 by crossing two varieties: Fragaria virginiana, brought from Northeast America and Fragaria chiloensis, brought from Chile. It is the only fruit that carries its seeds outside (on average about 200 seeds per strawberry). Strawberry leaves can be eaten raw, cooked and even used to make tea.
There are numerous chocolate festivals every year
Because of their love for chocolate, people find many reasons to indulge in it. For example, July 7 is Chocolate Day – commemorating the day chocolate was first brought to Europe – in 1550, although a number of sources claim it may have been here as early as 1504, thanks to Christopher Columbus.
Official day or not, we know that chocolate first arrived in Europe in the 16th century. There’s also National Milk Chocolate Day – July 28th, International Chocolate Day – September 13th and, of course, National Bittersweet Almond Chocolate Day – November 7th.
